It’s not – at first sight – the sort of scenario most people would go out of their way to see. Most people would be wrong.

Mind you, a lot of people would go out of their way to see a film with Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey in the lead roles. They would be quite right. Both are excellent actors and, given the right script and direction, can produce sterling performances.

I Love You Philip Morris isn’t a complicated story. In fact, most of the plot developments are fairly predictable. Nevertheless, the characters are so engrossing – including the somewhat sociopathic Russell (played by Carrey) – that you can’t help but like them. And you find yourself hoping against hope that Russell manages to pull out of his self-destructive behaviour, or at least gets away with it just this once, without ruining his life and other people’s.

It’s funny, witty, fast-paced, and Ewan McGregor gets to bitchslap Jim Carrey. Unfortunately, it’s not for his horrible haircut, but you have to learn to take the rough with the smooth. You may have trouble with the fact that this film contains strong language, men kissing, and violence. None of it is gratuitous. It’s a hymn to life, love and hope.

In any case, there isn’t enough love in the world. Highly recommended, for people of all sexes. Just for once, it’s a romantic comedy For Men
