Yes, yes, I know. Bloody Genesis, with bloody Phil Collins, yada yada.
Look, they did some good stuff now and again. A lot of it was admittedly with Peter Gabriel, but you’ve got to hand it to Collins, Banks and Rutherford: if you’re going to be lampooned by a cult satire show like Spitting Image you might as well go all the way and ask them to make a video clip for you when you write a song that’s right up their alley.
Most of the faces date from the 70s and early 80s. The younger ones out there might have trouble recognising politicos like Margaret Thatcher, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Mikhail Gorbatchev. Look ’em up. Yes, Reagan really was a B-movie actor who co-starred in a film with a chimp.
Among the musicians: Sting, Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bette Midler, Pete Townshend, Bob Geldof – Genesis themselves, of course – and quite a few others. There are plenty of references to cinematic and real-life events, to the extent that the video has a (very incomplete) tropes page to itself.
It’s original, the tune is catchy, and I haven’t seen a commercial video clip this funny in a long time. “Weird Al” Jankovic doesn’t count, he’s a professional comic, and a good one. I mean mainstream pop/rock.
